Exciting news! Vince Zamora has been named the 2024 Hawai‘i Direct Support Professional of the Year!

Vince Zamora, a dedicated member of the Full Life ‘Ohana for 14 years, has been honored with the prestigious title by ANCOR, recognizing his exceptional contributions to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. His commitment to person-centered care, community involvement, and innovative leadership exemplifies the profound impact of compassionate support.

Kauila Haumea's journey showcases his resilience and dedication to community engagement and Hawaiian culture. Through founding his non-profit canoe club, Ohana Wa‘a Laulima, he has created inclusive opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. His story is a testament to the transformative power of community support and cultural pride.

Full Life Visits the Capitol

Approximately 40 Big Island residents attended the Developmental Disabilities Council “Day at the Capitol” on March 7th. Full Life’s self-advocates and supporters engaged in legislative sessions and advocacy activities, promoting better education, healthcare, and resources for people with developmental disabilities. The event was a success, fostering awareness and driving policy discussions to support their needs.

Full Life’s 2024-2028 Strategic plan

The Board and Leadership team of Full Life recently gathered to revise our Mission, Vision, and Values and to orchestrate our strategic blueprint for 2024-2028. West Hawaii Program Coordinator

While on vacation in Kona Amanda met the Full Life team at our day program located in Alii Gardens Marketplace. Amanda was offered a job as a DSP and then was soon promoted to a Program Coordinator. We are so grateful to have Amanda serving ‘Ohana.

New Program In Partnership with the DOE and Vocational Rehabilitation

Full Life was awarded a contract to begin supporting high school students with disabilities ages 14-21 to transition from school to work or post-secondary education. The program is funded by the Department of Human Services Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and is called Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS).

Embracing Community and Culture: Kauila Haumea’s Journey with Full Life

In the vibrant community of Hilo, Kauila Haumea stands as a beacon of resilience and cultural pride. Despite facing the challenges of isolation during the pandemic, Kauila’s spirit remained unyielded. His journey with Full Life, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, has been nothing short of transformative for those who support Kauila.

A Story of Resilience and Community Building

The pandemic posed significant challenges, isolating many, especially those with developmental disabilities. However, Kauila’s initiative to start a paddling club with the support of his Full Life Direct Support Professionals Ian Kow and Vince Zamora and other friends brought a renewed sense of purpose and connection. His collaboration with Sammy Sampaga of OSMD Hawai’i (Operation-Sammy-Muscular-Distrophy) led to the donation of three outrigger canoes and shared use of the Billy Kanoi Halau on Hilo Bayfront. Ohana Waa Laulima (the name of the canoe club) provides opportunities for inclusive paddling, allowing people with developmental disabilities and other disabilities to engage in cultural activities, improve physical health, and make new friends.

Today, Kauila and Full Life host twice-weekly paddling practices open to all. OSMD and Ohana Waa Laulima hold an annual canoe race on King Kamehameha Weekend for Awesome Athletes in partnership with the Arc of Hilo. The weekly practices have seen over 40 participants, fostering new friendships, encouraging physical activity, and celebrating Hawaiian culture. The Annual race hosts hundreds of paddlers and volunteers. This year the race will be held on June 2, 2024, at Hilo Bay Front from 10am to 4pm.

Ian Kow, a Direct Support Professional and ‘Ohana Wa’a Lau Lima paddling founder, describes Kauila as unwavering, inspiring, and passionate. “Kauila knows what he wants and does everything in his power to achieve it. Even when there are setbacks, Kauila always persists and finds a way to try new things, especially when it is difficult.” Ian admires Kauila’s empathy and his ability to inspire those around him. “Everything Kauila does inspires those around him and challenges everyone to do more than what they think is possible.”

Ian continues to share that “I have learned to really never give up when a challenge arises and to always look for different ways to approach how something is done. Kauila has really pushed me to learn more about adaptive technology and resources and all of the amazing support that is available. Most importantly, I have learned from Kauila to trust and have faith that great things will happen when you take a chance.”

Kauila Haumea’s journey with Full Life is a powerful reminder of the strength found in community and the importance of cultural heritage. Kauila was born with a rare degenerative neurological condition. This condition has not limited Kauila’s ability to do the things he loves and to share his mana with others. His story is one of resilience, inclusion, and the unwavering spirit to overcome challenges and create meaningful connections.

A Passion for Community Engagement

Kauila’s favorite aspect of Full Life is the opportunity it provides to interact with the community. This engagement has been a cornerstone of his personal growth and fulfillment. Through Full Life, Kauila has not only found support but also discovered a platform to share his passion for Hawaiian culture and outrigger canoe paddling.

Lessons in Patience and Growth

One of the most valuable lessons Kauila has learned from Full Life and his Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) is the importance of patience, especially when training new support staff. This patience has been a vital part of his journey, helping him adapt and thrive in various circumstances.

An Interesting and Enlightening Journey

Kauila describes his experience with Full Life as an interesting journey and a significant learning curve. He believes that Full Life offers participants a chance to meet unique individuals with diverse interests and personalities, making it a community rich in experiences and opportunities for personal growth.

Founding Ohana Wa’a Laulima

Through Full Life, Kauila was able to establish his non-profit canoe club, Ohana Wa’a Laulima. The club emerged as a lifeline during the pandemic when traditional activities were curtailed. The cancellation of UH canoe paddling classes spurred Kauila and his friends to reconnect with the ocean by forming their own club. This initiative not only rekindled his connection to the sea but also fostered a sense of community and inclusion.

Becoming a KAHU

Kauila’s journey to becoming a KAHU (spiritual leader) is rooted in his family’s tradition of spiritual healing. Influenced by his extended family and his practice of Reiki, Kauila was ordained as a minister in 2007 through the International Assembly of Spiritual Healers and Earth Stewards Congregations. His spiritual journey has been marked by a deep connection to his heritage and a commitment to healing and energy work.

Blessings and Inspiration for Chanting Oli

Kauila supports his community through blessings. He is often sought after to share opening pule for events and ceremonies. Recently, Kauila provided the blessing for Full Life’s new Hilo Office. Interestingly, Kauila’s talent for chanting was not taught but inspired. When he chants, he lets the spirits speak through him, creating a profound and authentic expression of his cultural heritage.

Memorable Experiences

One of Kauila’s favorite memories with a Full Life DSP involves an adventurous birthday celebration where he went zip lining. This experience is a testament to his adventurous spirit and determination not to let anything slow him down.

Involvement in the Abled Hawaii Artist Festivals

Kauila was the first healing arts practitioner to participate in Hilo’s Abled Hawaii Artists (AHA) festival. His participation inspired the inclusion of other healing arts practitioners in the festival.

Ian Kow shares that paddling with Kauila has been a transformative experience. “Kauila’s passion has really pushed me to try many new activities. He has inspired every single person in the UH Recreational paddling class and in ‘Ohana Wa’a Laulima, consistently demonstrating that there are no limits to what individuals with disabilities can accomplish.”

Kauila’s empathy stands out to Ian. “I was recently reminded how deeply empathetic Kauila is and his ability to understand when others are struggling is deeply admirable. Kauila is also very passionate in everything he does and finding new ways to unleash that passion will only help not only Kauila but everyone around him.”

Introduction from John Randerson – Full Life Finance Director

I love numbers and my day begins with Sudoku puzzles before I even think about coffee. So, living most of my working life as an accountant is not surprising. I started accounting long before personal computers and most small businesses had hand-written ledgers. Most of those numbers had to be added up and balanced using an ancient skill called mental arithmetic. Since my handwriting is as bad as most Doctors’ I am very thankful for modern technology. But staring at computer screens all day is not a good idea so I play tennis and golf as often as I can.

I guess my conclusion about life is that the most important ingredient is good relationships (even better for you than dark chocolate!). Relationships add richness and flavor to life and I am blessed with wonderful family and friends. I came here from New Zealand in 2003 and met and married my wife Sonja. Twenty years later we have six kids and fourteen grandkids between us. They are scattered around the US and in NZ and Australia so living in Hawaii works well.

I look forward to getting to know the Full Life family and have so appreciated the warm and friendly Aloha welcome I have received.

Introduction from Amanda Charpentier – Full Life West Hawaii Program Coordinator

Amanda Charpentier graduated from Judson University with a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion and Performance. While studying, she worked for the Judson RISE program, which is a secondary education for those with developmental disabilities. Amanda has been a part of Full Life for close to a year and loves getting to know participants, their families, and the direct support staff. She aims to build relationships and provide opportunities for participants to work towards their goals and sustain a happy and healthy life.

Full Life goes to the State Capital

Approximately 40 Big Island residents attended the Hawaii State Capitol on March 7 ^th to participate in the Developmental Disabilities Council “Day at the Capital” event. The DD council provided travel scholarships for 11 Full Life self-advocates and 6 Full Life advocates including parents and Direct Support Professionals to attend. Full Life’s Board President, Franz Weber, also supported the self-advocates at the event. The goals were to advocate for better education, employment, health care, housing, self-determination, funding, and transportation. The activities also included attending a House and Senate floor session, meeting with legislators, and a welcoming reception. The mission was a success: to spread awareness about people with developmental disabilities and the issues important to them and to call for greater resources and initiatives to support their needs.

Full Life participant Stacy Ito commented that she had an enjoyable flight over to Oahu. She introduced herself to many other airline passengers with excitement telling them that she was going to the capital. Stacy also interacted with the Legislators while having a good lunch, plus she loved her new T-Shirt from Day at the Capitol. State Senator Kai Kamaka stated. “As policymakers, it’s our responsibility to listen to their voices and work towards policies that address the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities”.

Senator Joy San Buenaventura invited Full Life Executive Director Jim Kilgore to give the Moment of Contemplation speech to open the Senate Floor Session. Senator San Buenaventura also introduced all of the Full Life self-advocates and advocates in the gallery to the Senate. In his speech, Jim shared the importance of diversity, access, inclusion, and resources for people with developmental disabilities and their families. He asked the Senators to reflect on their roles of supporting the self-advocates to experience belonging, the feeling of being accepted and valued. One of Full Life’s participants and self-advocate stated that the highlight was hearing the speech at the legislative hearing. She said that all the staff at the event were so kind and helpful.

During lunch, several legislators came and visited Full Life and Arc of Kona self-advocates including Senator Tim Richards, Senator Joy San Buenaventura, Senator Dru Kanuha, Representative Nicole Lowen, Representative David Tarnas, Representative Mark Nakashima, and Representative Richard Onishi.

Towards the close of the day, attendees departed the Capitol with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that their voices had been heard and their advocacy had made a difference. Events like Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day serve as a powerful catalyst for change, inspiring communities to unite in pursuit of a more equitable and compassionate future.

This prestigious accolade is awarded by ANCOR, a national nonprofit association representing over 1600 community providers of services to people with disabilities.

This year, Vince Zamora, representing Full Life Hawaii, emerged as a beacon of excellence from an incredibly competitive pool of nearly 500 candidates. His selection underscores not only his exceptional contributions but also the profound impact of his compassion and commitment to the field of developmental disabilities.

“Vince is one of the most supportive, kind, intelligent, and humble people I know” shares Jim Kilgore, Executive Director of Full Life. “To truly understand what sharing Aloha means, one only needs to spend some time with Vince and watch him support others to achieve their dreams.” This sentiment echoes through Vince’s numerous accomplishments and the heartfelt stories of those lives he touched.

Faced with safety measures that prevented him from accompanying a participant to work for job coaching, Vince displayed unparalleled dedication by securing employment at the same grocery store. This selfless act ensured his participant was able to keep his job and feel supported and safe, showcasing Vince’s genuine empathy and kindness.

Vince’s tenure at Full Life has been marked by a resolute commitment to every participant, Direct Support Staff, colleague, and community member. His boundless compassion, combined with an infectious energy, has garnered the admiration and respect of all who have had the privilege of working alongside him.

“My favorite part of my job is participating in community activities with my participant,” says Vince. This involvement includes Special Olympics, theatrical productions at The Palace Theater and The East Hawaii Cultural Center, and Ohana Wa’a Laulima, a paddling halau dedicated to serving people with disabilities.

Vince’s approach to support is deeply rooted in person-centeredness. His ability to empower participants to believe in themselves and achieve their dreams is nothing short of awe-inspiring Among the many highlights of Vince’s career, his support for a participant’s dream of acting, singing, and dancing at the Hilo Palace Theater stands out as a testament to his belief in the capabilities and potential of every individual.

His work fosters a sense of belonging and community spirit, underscoring the importance of collective support and unity.

Vince emphasizes the importance of nurturing relationships with participants’ families, as this rapport is beneficial in meeting participants’ needs and desires. “Often times it falls on the DSW to nurture the relationships with participants’ ohana,” he notes.

When asked about his ANCOR achievement, Vince humbly states, “I am truly humbled by this honor. This achievement is really for the entire Full Life Ohana for I couldn’t do it alone.”

His drive to be the best for his participants comes from a genuine desire to help make their dreams and desires possible. “Witnessing the growth in the participant inspires me,” Vince shares. “The young man I work with never wanted to be alone, and now he has so much independence. Full Life has given me the opportunity to help him with his barriers.”

An interesting fact about Vince is that he has been an uncle since he was 8 years old. He now has 10 nieces and nephews, and 16 great nieces and nephews, reflecting his deep-rooted sense of family and community.

A Legacy That Inspires

Prior to Full Life, Vince worked in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles for 23 years. “Full Life offered me the opportunity to build my life in Hawaii,” he says. Reflecting on his future, Vince envisions himself enjoying retirement in 15 years.

Vince Zamora’s contributions to the field of direct support are a beacon of hope and a testament to the impact of dedicated professionals on the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. His recognition as ANCOR’s Hawaii Direct Support Professional of the Year is a fitting tribute to his hard work, compassion, and unwavering dedication.

Full Life Hawai’i Mana I Ka Leo – Power of the Voice Award Recipient Announced!

During the 9th Annual East Hawaii Island Disability Legislative Forum on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, Full Life and Abled Hawai‘i Artists presented the Mana I Ka Leo – Power of the Voice Award to Jesse Floyd, Program Specialist for the Hawai‘i State Council on Developmental Disabilities on Hawai‘i Island for the past 11 years. Presenting the award was Mar Ortaleza, Full Life Program Specialist and Benefits Counselor, and organizer of Abled Hawai‘i Artists. Auspiciously, Mar was the very first recipient of the Advocate of the Year Award, given to him by Jesse in 2017.

As Mar offered the plaque to Jesse, those in attendance roared in applause at Auntie Sally’s Luau Hale, expressing great appreciation, gratitude, and congratulations. Jesse expressed heartfelt surprise, and reciprocated appreciation to those who supported him as he lead with a strong voice of advocacy for persons with disabilities in Hawai‘i County. Mar also chuckled “Jesse doesn’t only have a strong voice but a long one…my last phone conversation with Jesse was 39 minutes…who talks on the phone that long anymore?”

Jesse’s long service to our East Hawai‘i Island disability community began in August, 2012 and will end on December 31, 2023- “That’s 11 years of talking out loud…I mean advocating”, said Mar Ortaleza, co-emcee for this year’s East Hawai‘i Legislative Forum. Some of Jesse’s accomplishments over the years include:

Coordinating the many years of Day at the Capitol for Hawai‘i Island
Establishing the East Hawai‘i Island Disability Legislative Forum in 2015, West Hawai‘i Island Disability Legislative Forum in 2016, and developing and incorporating the 5 important areas of living- Education, Healthcare, Employment, Transportation, and Housing- which is part of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities Five Year Plan.
One of his biggest accomplishments was to help with the implementation of accessible transportation in the Puna Community Development Plan. Another is supporting agencies to be more educated about Employment First, National Disability Employment Awareness Month(NDEAM), Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

What will Jesse miss most from 11 years of supporting our disabled community? Jesse responded succinctly “I will miss the people the most: front line staff and participants.”

Hawai‘i County celebrates a renaissance of inclusion in the arts on Saturday, October 7th 2023, with Abled Hawai‘i Artists (AHA) 16th annual art festival , held at the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo, 10am to 3pm!

AHA promotes disability awareness and pride by celebrating the spectrum of creativity, while promoting inclusive entrepreneurship in the arts.

AHA is the largest celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act on Hawai’i Island, a celebration of the National Disability Employment Awareness Month- a meaningful community event that brings together more than 400 participants for a day of inclusive music, performing arts, visual arts, healing arts, hands on demonstrations, silent auction and more.

AHA is a FREE event also incorporates speeches by disability self advocates and important community leaders. Enjoy FREE healing arts demonstrations, express the artist in you with various FREE all-ages and abilities art making activities – fun for the entire `ohana. Employment Service Coordinator – Disabilities (Hilo)

Full Life is seeking a full-time Employment Specialists to join our dynamic team at a flourishing non-profit organization on Hawaii Island. The employment specialist will train and supervise staff and support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the following activities:

on-going job coaching services to include on-the-job work skills training and systematic instruction required to perform the job;
person-centered employment planning;
job development, carving, or customization;
negotiations with prospective employers;
assistance for self-employment including identifying potential business opportunities and developing a business plan;
worksite visits as needed by the individual or employer to assess for new needs and to proactively support the participant to address issues that arise;
ongoing evaluation of the individual’s job performance;
individualized problem-solving/advising with the participant about issues that could affect maintaining employment;
training in skills to communicate disability-related work support and accommodation needs;
assessing the need for basic job aids, facilitating referral through the participant’s DOH-DDD case manager for assistive technology assessment and acquisition of assistive technology from Division of Vocational Rehabilitation;
facilitating referral through the DOH-DDD case manager to a Discovery & Career Planning provider for financial literacy, money management and budgeting;
providing information and training (benefits counseling)
training in arranging and using transportation, such as fixed route public transportation or paratransit services to get to and from the participant’s place of employment;
career advancement services.

EDUCATION & WORK REQUIREMENTS : Certification in rehabilitation counseling OR a Bachelor’s Degree in any field and two (1) year of experience assisting job seekers with intellectual and developmental disabilities in acquiring competitive integrated employment. Two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred.

Full Life is seeking one Full Time Program Coordinator/Service Supervisor responsible for supervision of Direct Support Workers who work one-on-one with individuals with developmental disabilities in their homes, communities and workplaces. The Program Coordinator ensures that service delivery meets standards of quality and all internal and external regulations.

Primary responsibilities are:

Assuring that Direct Support Workers have the skills and tools to provide personal assistance that helps each individual we support reach their goals and achieve their dreams.
Writing individual plans per Full Life policy, entering monthly supervision visit notes into a data base.
Creating data collection templates based on the individual plan.
Attending and participating in annual goal setting meetings for each person on your case load.
Reviewing time sheets, data collection and associated costs requests from Direct Support Workers twice a month to assure compliance with state regulations and Full Life policy.

Days/Hours of Work: This position is essentially a Monday through Friday daytime position 40 hours a week. However, to effectively supervise the Direct Service Workers some hours after 5:00 and weekend hours will be necessary in order to do on-site visits when the DSW is working. This position also requires being On-call for after hours/weekend emergencies.

Communication Demands: This position requires oral and written communication with supervisor, employees, co-workers, families, participants, and government agencies. Must have the ability to accept and give constructive criticism. Must keep communication open and clear between all parties (supervisor, participant, family, government agency, DSW).

Full Life Awarded ‘Eleu Grant- Participants Emergency Preparedness Kit

Through a generous grant from Hawai’i Island United Way (HIUW), Full Life was able to purchase emergency kits consisting of some or all of the following items (depending on need) for 47 people with developmental disabilities. Kits included Water Jugs, 14 day supply of non-perishable food, can opener, first aid kit, radio, flashlight, batteries, soap, toilet paper, masks, sunscreen, whistle, and other toiletries. This is significant because most of these beneficiaries cannot afford these extra supplies for emergencies. We are also assured they will have what is needed in case of an emergency.

A smaller portion of the funds were spent on 2 months of HIPAA compliant video (Zoom) and messaging software (Notifyd). This allowed Full Life Program Coordinators to check on several people with developmental disabilities remotely in order to limit face to face contact during the COVID Pandemic. Furthermore, Full Life used our zoom licenses to offer virtual activities so that people with developmental disabilities could stay connected with each other during the time when they were limiting their access to the community and not participating in group activities. Classes included weekly fitness classes, weekly art classes, weekly movie socials, and weekly music classes.

Full Life’s partnership with HIUW has greatly benefited the people Full Life Serves. The partnership ensured that the people who need emergency kits the most for future emergencies will have them in a safe location. Every person Full Life serves now has an emergency kit as recommended by the Hawaii State Department of Health. We are also able to keep connected with participants and their families during the pandemic.

When Full Life contacted all of our participants for the Emergency Preparedness Kits, the reaction from the family members and caregivers was amazing! They really thanked us for thinking about their loved ones’ needs. We know Hurricane season and the COVID-19 pandemic is upon us, so we wanted to make sure that all our participants were prepared in case of an emergency. Another heartwarming story, is all of our Virtual Classes are social time for our participants. It’s so wonderful to watch their gleeful eyes as they see their friends on the tv or computer screen. They laugh, smile, converse and say how much they miss each other. Thank you HIUW for helping us with these virtual classes and meetings through Telehealth Video.

Full Life Hawai’i: Individualized and Island-wide; Celebrating 20 Years, in 2020!

Full Life believes that every person, regardless of ability, deserves to lead a happy, fulfilled and self-determined life based on their own individual strengths, preferences and dreams.

At Full Life Hawai’i, we are inspired by the people we support, and we want to share that with you the only way we know how: Through the empowered voices and passionate creativity of the people we support!

Renaissance of Inclusion Video Project is a vision of Mar Ortaleza, Full Life Director of Programs, and organizer of Abled Hawai’i Artists(AHA). As a Direct Support Worker, Mar assisted an aspiring nature photographer refine his passion and gift of taking underwater pictures into a micro-enterprise. This collaboration inspired Mar to establish an annual art festival for artists of diverse abilities to celebrate their creative expression, and provide them with opportunities to explore entrepreneurship in the arts! In 2008, Abled Hawai’i Artists(AHA) was established in 2008; an inclusive celebration of abilities and promotion of entrepreneurship in the arts! Annually occurring on the third Saturday of July, AHA is the largest celebration of the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the Hawaiian Islands.

The many successes and life challenges of artists with nuanced abilities fascinated Mar, who is inspired to share their stories. Through the Renaissance of Inclusion Project, Mar and our participants collaborated with a local team of music composers, filmmakers, along with co-advocates, allies and natural supports to bring out the ideas, personal messages and life narrative of people with disabilities! The results are short video clips that share a glimpse of people who are passionate about their lives on Hawai’i Island.

“ Don’t Give Up ” is the first clip of our Renaissance of Inclusion video project, featuring Louie Perry, III, who was our first employment Services Program participant in 2011. Louie is the inspiration that established Abled Hawai’i Artists. In 2011, Louie also represented USA in World Special Olympics at Athens, Greece, taking home three individual gold medals and a silver in relay in cross country! Since then, he has been a volunteer coach for Keau’au and Kamehameha boys cross country teams. Louie lives a full life continuing to run, and pursuing his nature photography microenterprise!

$100 Hiring Bonus for Kona and North Hawai’i Island

Full Life is seeking Direct Support Professionals for persons with developmental disabilities in Hilo, Kona, Waimea, and Honokaa. We have immediate part time, Full Time and on-call openings for caregivers to provide one on one support for individuals, both out in the community and in their homes. Some on call positions in Kona will be offered a stipend for being available to cover certain days. Duties include helping participants obtain their goals, participating in various hobbies, health and safety, and community events. Some positions require assisting with personal care and medication assistance. Experience working with individuals who have developmental disabilities is helpful, but not required as we provide training for the right people.

Applicants must have GED or high school diploma, be able to pass a criminal background check and have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving abstract, current automobile registration, insurance and safety check. Other requirements for working with our participants are current CPR-First Aid certificate and 2 step TB clearance (we will assist you getting these requirements.)

2018 Annual Participant Awards & Celebration- ALL WINNERS!

On Saturday, February 10th, Full Life celebrated its eighteenth year of providing robust support services to our Hawai’i Island ‘ohana who have intellectual disabilities!

Well attended by participants, family members, support staff, Board of Directors and community supporters, the theme of this year’s event was “The Roaring 20’s”. The Waimea Community Center was transformed into the richness and rave reminiscent of that era; everyone received either a pearl necklace or gold bow tie! An Italian buffet with heart-shaped pasta was served with heart-themed desserts.

During the program, participants received certificates of recognition for their outstanding achievements! Pauline Aughe, who served seven years on the Board and chaired the Outreach and Fundraising Committee was honored with this year’s “Mana I Ke Leo” (Power of the Voice) Award! Mar Ortaleza, Employment Services and Outreach Coordinator, a member of the Outreach and Fundraiser Committee, Program Committee, who also took on the Interim Director of Programs position, was also acknowledged for his accomplishments which included being the very first awardee of the Outstanding Advocate of the Year for the East Hawai’i Island Disability Legislative Forum.

We were treated to a wonderful preview magic show by Bruce and Jennifer Meyers. Our very own Josie “The Jokester” opened the program with her funny jokes. Fans were given out to everyone, a promotion for our upcoming annual magic show fundraiser, themed “Wonder without Limits” on Saturday, March 10, 2018 7pm-9pm at the historic Hilo Palace Theater!

Finally, our Full Life entrepreneurs had their own room where they successfully sold their art and crafts. A fabulous photo booth was a the backdrop to this year’s fun event! We extend a big mahalo nui loa to the many people who made this event a success!

Pua Na Pua 2nd Annual art Festival

Full Life Hawaii, Abled Hawai’i Artists (AHA) and Donkey Mill Art Center are pleased to announce the second annual Pua Na Pua Art Festival, empowering people of all abilities to explore self-employment through the arts. This art fair is the first of its kind in West Hawaii, and will inclusively celebrate the contributions of both developmentally-disabled (DD) and non-DD artists, with booths available to artists of all abilities. The event will feature arts, crafts, and artisanal items, live music, demos, a silent auction and more.

This year for the first time, we are proud to feature work made especially for the festival by Full Life and Abled Hawaii Artists (AHA) participants in workshops hosted by Donkey Mill Art Center. Participants explored three different media over the course of six days, including printmaking, ceramics and metals/enameling. Together, we created framed prints, cards, ornaments, pendants, earrings and key chains with a common “heart” theme, perfect for holiday giving! Be sure to look for these special items at the festival.

Louie Perry, III, Full Life’s first Employment Services participant has reached a milestone in his photography business! One of his photographs was chosen to be part of an exhibit at the East Hawai’i Cultural Center. Please join us for the opening reception of the Hawaii Photography Exhibition: ISOLATION , this Saturday June 3rd. The reception will begin at 4:30pm with a talk by this year’s juror, renowned photographer and celebrated educator, Linda Connor. The opening will continue with award presentations and viewing of the exhibition.

Program Coordinator -Developmental Disabilities (Kona and West Hawaii)

Primary responsibilities are:

1. Assuring that Direct Support Workers have the skills and tools to provide personal assistance that helps each individual we support reach their goals and achieve their dreams.

2. Writing individual plans per Full Life policy, entering monthly supervision visit notes into a data base.

3. Creating data collection templates based on the individual plan.

4. Attending and participating in annual goal setting meetings for each person on your case load.

5. Reviewing time sheets, data collection and associated costs requests from Direct Support Workers twice a month to assure compliance with state regulations and Full Life policy.

6. Understanding and adhering to state regulations, high quality standards and Full Life policies.

7. Maintaining and building relationships with clients, Direct Support Workers, families and community stakeholders. 8. Supervision of staff, scheduling, hiring, coordinating schedules

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Must have knowledge about developmental disabilities and/or be willing and able to gain that knowledge through experience, training and research.

2. Must have excellent computer knowledge and ability, and knowledge of MS Word and Outlook.

3. Must have effective verbal and written communication skills, including grammar and spelling proficiency.

4. Must have strong organizational and teamwork skills.

5. Must be able to give and receive information, prepare written materials, and create and carry out action plans.

6. Must be able to multi-task effectively

7. Must be able to meet deadlines under pressure

8. Must be able to represent Full Life in a professional manner

Other Requirements of this position:

1. Current Two Step TB clearance.

2. Current CPR and First Aid Certification.

3. Current Driver’s License with valid automobile insurance and reliable personal transportation (mileage reimbursement).

4. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school in a related field or a BA in a non-related field with at least one year of related DD experience.

Also, we started the season of giving with our participant-entrepreneurs! They shared a preview of selected arts and crafts, which were available for purchase. Those attending had the first pick, before they are offered to the general public in the upcoming Full Life 2nd annual Holiday arts and crafts, Friday December 2, 2016 at our Full Life office.

A collaboration between Full Life, Abled Hawai’i Artists and Puna Taiko, with support from Parks & Rec, this all inclusive event allow participants of all abilities the opportunity to WATCH a mini-performance by Puna Taiko, followed by a session where people can LEARN how to play their choice of taiko drum, then PLAY!

There will be Full Life Entrepreneurs present to share and sell their art and crafts. Full Life will provide water refreshment, and Abled Hawai’i Artists will provide supplies for chalk art! Check out the Drumming Social Facebook event page!

Tatiana Isotov joins us with a Master of Science in Educational Policy and Management. She is a professional artist whose medium is in mosaic tile, and has experience working with the special needs population in the DOE. These complementary pairings allow Tatiana to foster creative abundance as a setting for learning. Please welcome our new Learning Center Program Coordinator Tatiana!

Charity Ebenizer is our new West Hawaii Program Coordinator. Charity has a BA in Psychology and many years of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a variety of capacities from case management to one on one supports. She recently moved back to her home state of Hawaii from Anchorage, Alaska. She is excited to be back home and will be a wonderful support to Full Life participants and their families. We are pleased to introduce new administration members to our East Hawai’i Full Life Ohana!

Emily Twidwell is our new East Hawaii Office and Program Administrator! She comes to us with a solid back ground as an office administrator in the medical field. Emily is eager to meet everyone including our participants, families, and DSWs. Her positive and helpful nature will be a valuable asset to our team. Please know that you can count on Emily for support!

Mia Manzo is one of our new East Hawaii Program Coordinators. With a Master’s in Education from UC Berkley, she has many years of experience working with individuals with special needs in education in the Bay Area. Her diverse experience will transfer well into her new role, and she will be a strong support to our participants and families. Welcome Mia!

Lily Cash , a recent University of Hawaii-Hilo graduate with a BS in Nursing, is a seasoned former Full Life Direct Support Professional! We welcome her back as our new Waiver Registered Nurse. Lily knows many of our participants, understands their support needs and will be an excellent addition to the Full Life team. Welcome back Lily!

David Tomich is a native of Hawai’i Island, and a graduate of University of Hawai’i-Hilo with a bachelor’s in psychology. David joins our ohana with a wealth of work experience in the field of developmental disabilities. We are grateful to have him on board as our other new East Hawaii Program Coordinator!

HILO: Second annual 2016 East Hawaii Island Disability Legislative Forum from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016, at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale, 799 Pi’ilani Street, Hilo.

These free event will feature a forum where policymakers will answer questions about disability-related issues such as employment, housing, transportation, and health. Special activities include the opportunities to express your opinion on topics important to you and to meet and talk story with State legislators and County officials. Provider agencies have prepared booths with information about many available services and supports.

Pua Nā Pua 1st Annual Art Festival Celebrates Artists
With and Without Disabilities!

Keauhou, HI – The first annual Pua Nā Pua Art Festival will debut in the Keauhou Shopping Center courtyard on Saturday, August 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This free event will inclusively celebrate the work of artists with and without disabilities, featuring artwork and handmade crafts, artisanal goods, musical performances, a silent auction, free face painting for the kids, and mouth-watering food and ice cold drinks for sale.

The Pua Nā Pua Art Festival is a production of Donkey Mill Art Center (DMAC), Full Life Hawaii, and Abled Hawai’i Artists (AHA), and is modeled on the highly successful AHA event in Hilo at the Prince Kuhio Shopping Center, now in its ninth year.

AHA, led by Mar Ortaleza, promotes inclusive events for artists with and without disabilities, and helps artists of diverse abilities to explore employment opportunities.

DMAC is the nonprofit arts education center based in Kona coffee’s historic Donkey Mill where people of all ages and abilities gather to ignite their creativity and develop their artistic skills through classes and exhibitions.

Full Life assists in the empowerment of individuals with developmental disabilities by providing free services that include community based supports, personal assistance, and employment services authorized by State of Hawai’i Department of Health.

Are you ready to make a difference in our community by working for a company with a meaningful mission? Full Life is seeking a Full Time Program Coordinator/Service Supervisor responsible for supervision of Direct Support Workers who work one-on-one with individuals with developmental disabilities in their homes, communities and workplaces. The Program Coordinator ensures that service delivery meets standards of quality and all internal and external regulations.
Primary responsibilities are:

1. Assuring that Direct Support Workers (DSW) have the skills and tools to provide personal assistance that helps each individual we support reach their goals and achieve their dreams.
2. Writing individual plans per Full Life policy, entering monthly supervision visit notes into a data base.
3. Creating data collection templates based on the individual plan.
4. Attending and participating in annual goal setting meetings for each person on your case load.
5. Reviewing time sheets, data collection and associated costs requests from Direct Support Workers twice a month to assure compliance with state regulations and Full Life policy.
6. Understanding and adhering to state regulations, high quality standards and Full Life policies.
7. Maintaining and building relationships with clients, Direct Support Workers, families and community stakeholders.
8. Supervision of staff, scheduling, hiring, coordinating schedules

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Must have knowledge about developmental disabilities and/or be willing and able to gain that knowledge through experience, training and research.
2. Must have excellent computer knowledge and ability, and knowledge of MS Word and Outlook/Office 365.
3. Must have effective verbal and written communication skills, including grammar and spelling proficiency.
4. Must have strong organizational and teamwork skills.
5. Must be able to give and receive information, prepare written materials, and create and carry out action plans.
6. Must be able to multi-task effectively
7. Must be able to meet deadlines under pressure
8. Must be able to represent Full Life in a professional manner
9. Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Other Requirements of this position:
1. Current Two Step TB clearance.
2. Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
3. Current Driver’s License with valid automobile insurance and reliable personal transportation (mileage reimbursement).
4. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school in Social Sciences or Education or a BA in a non-related field with at least one year of related DD experience.

Upon hire you will be required to pass a background check required by State Contract

Days/Hours of Work:
This position is essentially a Monday through Friday daytime position 40 hours a week.
However, to effectively supervise the Direct Service Workers some hours after 5:00 and weekend hours will be necessary in order to do on-site visits when the DSW is working.
This position also requires being On-call for afterhours/weekend emergencies.

Communication Demands:
This position requires oral and written communication with supervisor, employees, co-workers, families, participants, and government agencies. Must have the ability to accept and give constructive criticism. Must keep communication open and clear between all parties (supervisor, participant, family, government agency, DSW).

Since September 2015, Full Life has been collaborating with Diana Smith, a Dental Hygienist in West Hawaii. Diana has been volunteering her time with Full Life Learning Center to establish Preventative Dental Care & Oral Hygiene for Waiver participants ages 18 to 48.

Due to the insufficient coverage, most with Medicaid benefit have NO Preventative Dental Services! Per Med-Quest Division, Quest Hawaii “Persons under age 21 also receive full dental coverage, while individuals age 21 and over are covered for dental emergencies only under the Medicaid Fee-For-Service Program”. In Fact, the only remedy in our Medical System for them is an “Emergency” action, that of “Extraction of Teeth”. As a result, Some have not been to the dentist for years.

Due to Diana’s commitment and passion for our participants we now have a successful Oral Hygiene Program! program participant now has their personal dental chart, with their notes and personal description of each tooth, and the history of their oral hygiene. They have enjoyed the classes and group discussions; both visual and “hands-on”. A Field Trip to her office at Hawai’i Family Dental Center in Kailua-Kona is upcoming in March!

Full Life Participant Artwork in Ohana Care Art Show!

Congratulations Jennifer Poblano, Full Life Hawaii participant who co-wrote her first book called “Fuzzyland”! With the assistance of Kat Belleci, Employment Direct Support Worker, Mar Ortaleza, Employment Services Coordinator, and her parents Tom and Debbie, four images from Jennifer’s self-illustrated book were converted into a promotional poster. The poster was then submitted and accepted in this year’s 2nd Annual Ohaha Care Art Show in Honolulu!

The theme for Ohana Care art show, “Kulia i ka nu’u- Strive to reach the highest”, is a Hawaiian proverb or ‘olelo no’eau and motto of Queen Kapi’olani. Check out Jennifer’s “Fuzzyland” poster and her bio for the upcoming art opening, which will be at the Ohana Health Plan Regional Sales Office, on Sept 17 ^th at 5pm.

When her book is published, Jennifer plans to having book signing events around Hawai’i Island, as well as participate in the Abled Hawai’i Artists 9th Annual Art Festival in July,2016. Full Life is the main and fiscal sponsor for this amazing event, which is the largest celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the state of Hawai’i! Stone Wolfsong, Executive Director for Full Life will read the proclamations from Mayor Kenoi and Governor Ige at noon!

I feel really lucky to have found something that fulfills me” – Vince

Conversations with Full Life Direct Support workers are heartwarming and inspiring. It is work driven by love and the same kind of passion demonstrated by the founding family.

Joy McCroskey is new to Full Life and has already demonstrated a remarkable level of commitment and passion. Joy shared that the most rewarding aspect of her work is “watching the people I support grow and see how they are able to live more full and fulfilled lives as a result of the relationship. I love that Full Life is called what it is, because that is the point of what we do. To be honest, the individuals I support have helped me as much as I have helped them. I just found that the way I have been able to develop my skill set over the years, such as being a patient person or a caring person are not developed until they are tested. The more I am challenged the more I grow. I am able to help them, only when they challenge and inspire me.” Joy also shared that she likes working for Full Life because the mission is “so much about the participants and not about money and power. Everything we learned in orientation is so spot on about always putting the individual first and treating each person we support with respect and dignity.”

Vince Zamora has been a Direct Support Worker for over five years. “It turns out that I am really good at being a Direct Support Worker and I really like it, he says. I spend time hanging out with one of my friends, doing what he wants and needs to do. I feel really blessed to have Daylan in my life.” This work is very rewarding, Vince added. We are bringing attention to a community that didn’t get attention in the past. Now, services are community-based. I am so happy that things for folks with developmental disabilities are progressing. Full Life is proud to have Vince as part of the ’ohana and the feeling is mutual. Full Life is really person-centered, Vince stated. “It is about what each individuals strengths and abilities are and helping each person reach their dreams, which is really exciting. I mean how often do you get to do that?”

The skills and talents that Gabriela brings to her work are based on treating the people she supports like family. To Gabriela that means that she is fully engaged with them. That kind of engagement builds trust, she says, and with trust, the growth and learning begin to happen. Gabriela says that “love opens all doors. I have to find my way to their heart. I try to be patient because I can see their struggles and challenges.” “The work is not about me, she adds. I stand back a little and observe before I react. I try many various approaches.”

It’s a Kakou Thing!

In celebration of Full Life’s Fifteenth Anniversary…. An Interview with the Founding Family.

Full Life was founded on faith and a belief that “a miracle would happen” for Thelma and Curt Tyler’s son Charlie. The Tylers were very concerned about what would happen to their son when they were gone. In a recent interview Elizabeth Rice and Curtis Tyler, sister and brother of Charlie, shared that that miracle did happen along with a commitment from the family to promote the idea of self-determination for individuals with developmental disabilities on Hawai’i Island.

The Tyler family had opened a home in Kona to address the needs and desires of families and their loved ones with developmental disabilities. Larry Casper and Deann Canuteson came to the Big Island to run that home and support the individuals there, including Charlie. The home worked wonderfully well according to Curtis. The State of Hawaii was very encouraging, but payments from the state were often late and the mainland agency that employed Larry and Deann eventually withdrew. Curt Tyler asked Deann to stay. Her goal was to make sure Charlie would always have someone to care for him and she was the miracle that the family needed. Deann knew about “Waiver Services” the state program that allowed individuals with developmental disabilities to waive institutionalization in favor of services in their own homes and communities. Deann and Larry spent countless days, weeks and months with the Tyler family putting together the plans, permits and contracts for an agency that would assure that Charlie always had care. Finally, the time came to find a name for the new agency. Curt Tyler suggested Full Life, as that is what they all wanted for Charlie and others in the community. “He was very humble”, says Elizabeth of their father. “And very community minded”, added Curtis. It was always about the individuals and the concept of self-determination. “It was very synchronistic.” Curtis added, “The state, the family, Deann and Larry were all in sync.” Deann was a ‘major bright light’ in Charlie’s life and the first President/CEO of Full Life. Larry became the first President of the Board of Directors.

Curt Senior had a strong belief that Charlie , who was born in Kona, and a member of the Kona community, would always be a visible member of the community. He frequently took Charlie with him when he was in the community. “They were best buddies”, added Curtis. Through Full Life, Charlie has been able to live as full a life as the family hoped for and remain connected to the Kona Community.

He has received incredible love and care from his Direct Support Workers and the entire Full Life ‘ohana. Elizabeth’s eyes fill with tears when she says, “Full Life has given Charlie a life. Our father’s vision has remained unchanged” Curtis added, “I know dad is watching down on this. Charlie, just like everyone has unique talents and gifts. Full Life is part of his family. It is not an institution. Stone, Deann, and the Board of Directors have enabled people to come into Charlie’s life who have become his extended family.”

Full Life holds a high standard of excellence, says Elizabeth, that comes from the Tyler family. “It’s about the people Full Life supports,” adds Curtis, “not the organization. Aloha is a big part of Full Life. There is a vision of what is possible for folks to live a full life. The leaders hold that vision. Full Life is pono and it will continue to rise up. The passion that started with Curt Tyler has never left. It is a ‘kakou thing’; it is inclusive.”

Full Life distinguishes itself from other agencies by it’s approach. Full Life embraces each participant as a whole person and together with the person, pursues the path of highest good.

As a person with a disability, I understand what it is to be told what you can and cannot do, with the bar of possibility usually set so low. Full Life allows each individual to explore their fullest potential and discover what he/she can achieve. Participants are not just looked at for who they are. They are looked at for whom they can become.

By being a part of Full Life, we are declaring that we are in agreement with the foundation upon which our country was founded on. The Declaration of Independence states,

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Day in and day out, Full Life upholds and lives these truths in the ways they interact and treat each other as staff, board members and participants. In 1974 the Hawai’i Lodging& Tourism Association sponsored a charitable “Superwalk”to benefit one major charitable organization. In 1979, the Hawai’i Lodging & Tourism Association members voted to extend the reach of support offered by the Walk’s fund-raising capability.
The Visitor Industry CHARITY WALK is the result of this decision. All Hawaii non-profit charities are eligible to benefit. Walkers are treated to ono food, drink and first-aid at checkpoints along the walk route. All checkpoints are operated and supplied with refreshments and helpers by Hawaii hotels and allied organizations. Entertainment may also be provided at many checkpoints and at the end of the walk.

Walkers can pay their own $35.00 minimum walk fee, or they can obtain at least $35.00 in pledges before the day of the walk.

2014 Drumming Socials – Hilo

We are excited to let you know that our first drumming social this year will include the return of Paul Sakamoto and his amazing Puna Taiko Drumming group!

As this event grows more into a celebration of arts, inclusion and strengthening our community, we invite more activities to match our diverse community!

Kauila Haumea: Healing the World a Little at a Time

Forty-year-old Kauila Haumea of Hilo has intense, expressive brown eyes that look deep into you. And he has a beautiful singing voice – a gift, he says, from his father Solomon Haumea, who used to drive a tour bus, and play guitar and ‘ukulele for his passengers.

Kauila also chants, and sometimes when he sings or chants, people are moved to tears.

But mostly, his heart is into healing. It’s about giving back to the community as much as he can, he says. “I want to help to heal the world a little bit at a time.”

“When I’m laying hands on someone,” he says, “it’s not only my hands on the person. There are multiple hands at work. My spiritual guides are helping me, and all our healing energy is being combined.”

And, he says, that healing energy doesn’t only benefit the person he’s working on. It also comes back to him.

That’s significant because Kauila has some physical challenges, stemming from a genetic central nervous system disorder that causes him to have problems with his eyesight, balance and gait.

It also causes some communication problems, specifically a speech delay. A couple years ago, he got an electronic communication device called a Vantage Lite. His is a black box sheathed in a worn, black leather case with a grid that lies atop the screen, which makes it easy for him to touch a specific letter. When he does, that letter is voiced. This acts as a prompt and helps him vocalize a word he’s having trouble with.

The device helps him communicate and empowers him to be highly involved in the community around him. Kauila is a member of the local Lion’s Club and of the East Hawai‘i Developmental Disabilities Committee. He is a board member of a local disability rights group, and attends meetings of the Mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities.

“He goes in order to stay informed with what’s happening in the community,” says Gail Yoshishige, who describes Kauila as “very motivated and self-directed.” She is a Full Life Hawaii direct support worker (DSW) who helps Kauila during the week. Her assistance means he’s able to live in his own apartment; she helps with bill paying, cleaning, shopping and driving him to meetings and the like. Other DSWs help on weekends.

Gail also helps him get to his healing appointments, meetings and other gatherings. Kauila was the first healing arts practitioner to participate at Hilo’s Abled Hawaii Artists (AHA) festival. The annual arts festival features and celebrates individual abilities in the arts, including people both with and without disabilities. The volunteer-run festival has visual artists, performers, entertainers, and tables from organizations that provide services. (The seventh annual AHA festival will be held at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Full Life Hawaii is the festival’s primary and fiscal sponsor.)

Mar Ortaleza, who is Full Life Hawaii’s employment services coordinator, says Kauila has participated in the AHA festival since 2006. Says Mar, “His initial participation is what inspired me to begin organizing other healing arts practitioners to share their types of healing modalities with the public.”

Last year, Kauila also participated in the two-day Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity at Honolulu’s Hawai‘i Convention Center. Mar organized a healing arts area at the conference, and Kauila was the only healer from the Big Island. His massage sessions were booked solid.

Two women who experienced Kauila’s massages once told him he has “Pele’s hands.”

Mar says that Kauila’s massage, which he has studied formally, includes the Hawaiian style of massage called lomilomi. “And he’s also a reiki practitioner,” says Mar, “so he incorporates a lot of healing energy work in his practice. He also does oli; he chants when he feels like he is called to during his sessions.”

When Kauila does his oli, or Hawaiian chants, Mar says, it’s as though he doesn’t have a speech problem at all. “I think of it as his left brain being the speech part of his brain,” he says, “and that’s the part that is affected. But when you sing, it’s from your right brain, your creative side.”

He sometimes sings at church or with a friend at Hilo Coffee Mill. For 21 years now, he has rung the Salvation Army bell at Christmas, sometimes singing Christmas carols there outside KTA Pu‘ainako. His favorite is “Silent Night,” which he sings in both English and Hawaiian.

Kauila sometimes does Hawaiian blessings. Together, he and Mar blessed the Full Life Hawaii office in Hilo, and they have collaborated on other blessings as well.

“He’s amazing,” says Mar. “It’s like chicken skin. He has the voice of his ancestors when he olis.”

“We are thinking about branching out and doing a healing arts festival and calling it Haumea Healing Arts,” he says. “I suggested we call it by his name because Haumea is a very, very significant name in Hawaiian culture. Haumea is the earth goddess.”

He talks about how important healing is to Kauila. “I think it’s his passion and his life journey,” he says. “I think he said it, when he said that it heals both that person and himself. In a way, we’re all here to help each other heal. We’re healing each other, and healing ourselves, and helping ourselves to feel more complete.”

Mar says he really admires Kauila for being a great observer and having such a strong presence. “Despite an obvious obstacle, he has a strong presence because of who he is inside,” he says.

“I think he has a very strong connection to his ancestors, and you can see that and hear that and feel that when he does his olis. I also think he has a strong presence in the now, because of the challenges that he’s had in the past, and the challenges that he has to adapt to at every moment.”

Mar stops and thinks a minute. He says, “I just look forward to him finding more ways to heal.”

To heal others? Or to heal himself?

Mar doesn’t hesitate. “I mean that both ways,” he says.

Next Chapter Book Club: Friends, Food and Fun

Over a year ago, when Barbara Hoist started at Full Life Hawaii as its human resources and office manager, executive director Stone Wolfsong asked if she wanted to head up a book club, too. Barbara says she couldn’t believe her luck.

The once-a-week Next Chapter Book Club she now leads is part of a program from The Ohio State University Nisonger Center established 12 years ago so that anyone, regardless of reading ability, can belong to a book club. There are more than 100 “chapters” across North America and Europe. This is the first Next Chapter Book Club in Hawai‘i

Barbara looks forward to Wednesday afternoons, when she heads down to their Next Chapter Book Club meeting spot, outside of Jamba Juice in the Kona Coast Shopping Center. Members always arrive early for the hour-long book club, she says. “They get there 15 or 20 minutes early, every time, and push tables together. They always have the table ready for me.”

A small poster, which says “Next Chapter Book Club,” stands on the table and identifies the group.

“People walk by and see the poster and they can see that the members have developmental disabilities,” she says. “And they see us sitting around, laughing, and reading a book. It’s education. We are showing the community that people with developmental disabilities are out there and doing these things and having fun.”

“We have a beautiful conference room in our Full Life office,” she says, “and I could have everybody meet there every week, but we’d be hiding. We wouldn’t be out in the public eye.”

These days, about five core members attend regularly, and others come occasionally. Book club members must be 17 or older, but otherwise the club is open to anyone with developmental disabilities who wants to get together to read a classic novel, make friends and have some fun. Barbara says current members range from a young man in his 20s up to two sisters who are in their mid-60s.

“We’re very social,” she says, “and as well as reading together, we’re becoming such a tight little group of friends.”

As a group, they choose from a long list of abridged novels from the Classic Starts series, which are written at about a 4 ^th or 5 ^th grade level. The hardcover books are slightly larger than a paperback and are nicely bound with some illustrations.

The club’s first selection, when it started in 2012, was Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic The Secret Garden . It was a big hit.

When they finished that book, a family member invited the group to her home for an English tea party and to watch the movie on DVD. She made cucumber sandwiches, quiche and sweets, and served tea using her grandmother’s antique tea service.

“I was nervous about that,” says Barbara, “but she said, ‘You know what? It’s just sitting in a box.’” The party was a huge success, and the dishes were fine.

According to Barbara, the family member suggested that the book club pay attention to what was different between the movie and the book, and said that she was impressed to see how much of the book’s story the book club members had absorbed and understood.

One day, while reading that, one of the book club members, a woman with Down syndrome, brought a big, plastic sword; the kind sometimes used as part of a Halloween costume.

“It was Excalibur!” Barbara says. “She’s a ball of fun, and she was so proud. We had a lot of fun with that.”

When they finished the book, Barbara hosted the group at her home for a pizza party – “because nobody wanted to go out and roast venison or anything,” she says. Together, they watched “Sword in the Stone,” the Disney movie about King Arthur.

Sanoe Wong, who is in her mid-30s, was already a reader, even before joining the book club. She sometimes shows up with three or four books she’d just checked out of the library. She says she is very happy to belong to the book club. “I like to read every time,” she says. “It’s my favorite.”

Now they are reading The Arabian Nights . “Scheherazade, 1001 Nights…. Those are some wild stories!” says Barbara. “It’s interesting culturally, visiting that part of the world, and how weird the stories are.”

When they are done with this book, she speculates, they might have some Middle Eastern food. Maybe some hummus and pita, she says, and some baklava.

At each meeting, she helps book club members recap what they read before. Then the members take turns reading, and they talk about it as they go. “Because not everybody understands every word,” she says. “We discuss the story, learn new words and how people live differently in other times and places in the world, and compare that to how we live here in Hawai‘i.”

Then Barbara holds onto the books until the next time. “At the end of the session I give them the book and they’re absolutely thrilled. That’s not what we were supposed to do, but I thought, ‘Why not?!’ After we started a new book, some of them told me they went back and were looking at The Secret Garden again.”

Part of the fun of the book club, she says, is as a social outlet. “I think they’re really enjoying that. We’re just bonding as a little group of friends that check in with each other every week. I think we’ve made some pretty solid friendships.”

At a recent meeting, they celebrated member Edna Phillips’ 56th birthday. Edna says she likes the book club because she can read better now, and she enjoys reading the stories and learning from them.

Barbara says she would love to expand the group to include even more people. It’s open to anyone, regardless of reading ability or even comprehension ability. “That’s really minor compared to what we’re really about,” she says, “which is community exposure and friendship and doing something so-called ‘normal.’”

She is also always watching, she says, for someone who would like to co-facilitate Kona’s Next Chapter Book Club. “I would train them,” she says. “It’s not hard.”

And she’d love to have so many members that they need to expand and add additional groups.

“It’s about being out there and having fun,” she says. “We laugh and have a good old time.”

She says as much as members seem to really like it, she just loves it. “Pinch me!” she says. “This is part of my job ?!”

Louie Perry: Hitting His Stride

Louie Perry used to look at photos of Greece and wish he could see the place where the Olympic games originated, but he never thought it would actually happen. The 30-year-old Puna resident is a champion runner despite some serious health problems – a severe asthma attack at age 2 left him with brain damage and mild mental challenges, and he continues to deal with chronic and severe asthma.

But not only did the charismatic Pāhoa High School graduate visit Greece two years ago, he also won three gold medals there at the World Special Olympics , an event that drew 7,000 athletes from nearly 180 nations.

Louie has been a client at Full Life Hawaii for about four years and Full Life’s Mar Ortaleza has worked with him the whole time.

Mar says when they learned Louie was chosen to go to Greece, they couldn’t believe it.

“We talked about it and he was elated,” says Mar. “Me, too. It was the first time he’d gone out of the country, and he had a great time. He enjoyed the food and he said the women were beautiful.”

Louie says Greece was “a whole different world,” and that he liked it even more than he expected. Two years later, he is still marveling at all the ancient ruins. “And they’re still using them, as their markets!”

He says that the Special Olympics was challenging. It was very hot where they trained and he was surprised, too, by the crowds. “Choke people!” he says. “All the seats were taken, it was packed, and you’re like, ‘Wow! There are so many humans!’”

He ran in three different individual events, and won the gold medal in each. He also participated in a relay event, where his team took the silver.

Those were pretty amazing accomplishments for someone with asthma so severe that doctors say he shouldn’t be able to run.

“There’s people worse than me, but I do have pretty bad asthma,” he says. “It’s hard to have asthma and run. But I think I was born with a strong heart and that makes me able to run.”

He does get sick more easily than most, and the Big Island’s vog is a real problem. “I take medicine and use a machine every night,” he says. “And when the vog comes, I get super sick and have an asthma attack.” Mar says Louie frequently ends up at the emergency room.

But nothing slows him down for long. Whereas most Full Life Hawaii clients have just one direct support worker (DSW), Mar says that Louie is “such a dynamic person, it requires a whole team to assist him.”

Three afternoons a week, one DSW takes him to Kamehameha Schools, where Louie is a volunteer assistant coach for the boys’ cross-country team. “I run with the faster guys, and then when I take it easy, I go with the slower guys.”

After practice, the same DSW takes him to Ninjitsu practice, where they both participate. Louie says, with a smile, that the martial art teaches them how to be ninjas.

“We’re still on the basics,” he says. “Rolling. Basic steps. It’s the best exercise ever, and we have fun.”

Mar, who now works as Full Life Hawaii’s employment services coordinator, helps Louie these days with his photography business.

“One of Louie’s big dreams was to elevate his hobby of taking underwater photos to a micro-enterprise,” he explains.

He says that Louie is able to get marine life photos that are challenging for some photographers.

“Spending time with him underwater, I realized that he is in touch with nature,” says Mar. “The fish don’t swim away from him; they just hang out.”

“I assisted him in creating a very marketable portfolio, getting his general excise license, creating a business card, refining the quality of his art and getting some of it matted and framed.” Louie’s photos range from $1 postcards to $80 to $100 framed prints, and they sell.

“His photography is going to outlast his body and his ability to run,” explains Mar. “I’m helping him prepare for his old age.”

Inspired by working with Louie, seven years ago Mar established the annual art festival called Abled Hawaii Artists. It’s held each July at Hilo’s Prince Kūhiō Plaza. “The intent is to allow artists with disabilities to show and sell artwork,” he says, “and also to have community inclusion. This year, we also had about 10 healing practitioners who were sharing their massage, reiki or energy work with the public for free.”

Margie is another Full Life DSW who helps Louie regularly. Louie thinks of her as “the horse girl,” because she likes horses and teaches him about them. More frequently, though, she helps him find jobs, drives him to the work site and sometimes works right alongside him.

He likes labor-intensive outside jobs, like building rock walls and shoveling cinder. “He’s a very, very hard worker,” says Mar. “He’s very strong and very able; he’s definitely not a slacker!”

Louie says he learns different things from each of his Full Life DSWs. “And they’re friends,” he says. “Nice friends. We get to go places and it makes me smart. If I didn’t have them, I’d still be managing, and getting places, but it would be harder. I’d be walking, getting to the bus. They help me go different places and learn different things.”

Speaking of community, he says that when Louie got back to Hilo from Greece, a crowd met his flight.

“It was surreal,” says Mar. “Louie was kind of a celebrity. People were asking him questions and taking pictures. The mayor met him at the airport with a proclamation declaring ‘On this day in the County of Hawai‘i it is Louie Perry Day.’ Louie was blown away.”

How do you top that? What does Louie hope for his future? The quiet and good-natured man, with the easy smile and laugh, thinks a minute.

“I’m doing what I want to do,” he says. “Helping kids learn, and run. They’re younger, stronger, quicker than me, and they can be faster than I am. I’ve gotta teach the younger ones.”

Kamakoa Dela Cruz: A ‘Brave Warrior’

The first time I met 9-year-old Ethan “Kamakoa” Dela Cruz, it was a beautiful fall afternoon. He greeted me with a hand slap, and then leaned in to give me a friendly hug and kiss.

We were at a park near his Kohala home, along with his Full Life Hawaii direct support worker Katherine Belleci. “Aunty Kat” has worked with Kamakoa for about a year, focusing on four areas that are challenging for the third grader who was born with Down syndrome: socializing, words, physical activity and personal hygiene.

The day before, she’d taken Kamakoa for a therapeutic horseback riding lesson, and I asked him if he liked riding horses. “Yeah,” he said, touching my arm. “How about you?”

That, Kat tells me later, is exactly what they’ve been working on – having conversations that go beyond just saying, “Hi.”

“He can’t say some sounds well and it’s hard to understand him, so we work on speech patterns,” she says. “When he says a word I don’t understand, we talk about it. We figure out what it is, we say all the sounds, and we say a whole sentence with the word. It’s going great. He’s voluntarily using whole sentences on his own now. And his speech patterns are so much clearer. After a year, we’re actually having real conversations now.”

While Kat and I talked at a picnic bench, Kamakoa got up and started walking off. Kat watched for a moment and then gently followed. She told him he could be on his own but he needed to stay nearby. He did a little happy dance – “He loves having his freedom,” she told me – and then sat down on the grass not far from us. After awhile, he was lying on his stomach and arms, comfortably resting.

When his mother Malia Dela Cruz was pregnant, she had an ultrasound and then, at the doctor’s recommendation, an amniocentesis test. It was April Fool’s Day when they got a phone call saying their baby had Down syndrome, and at first Malia and her husband thought it was a bad joke. But it wasn’t.

“We were pretty devastated,” she says. “Just kind of grieving, in shock – not knowing how to deal with it.”

“Now, though, we don’t know what our life would be without him,” she says. “We feel blessed.”

The baby was born prematurely, and at two weeks old, he had heart surgery for a hole in his heart. He was in Kapi‘olani Hospital’s NICU for five weeks. Before he went home, nurses trained his parents to administer oxygen and use his feeding tube.

Malia and her husband Eugene named the baby “Kamakoa” – Brave Warrior, or Child Warrior – because they wanted him to have a strong name. Malia says it ended up being very appropriate.

“When we got him home,” she says, “he really thrived. After maybe a month, he pulled out his feeding tube. And he didn’t need oxygen anymore. He was just this trooper.”

“He had health issues that whole first year, and he overcame every one. It was hard, and we didn’t know what we were doing as parents, but he just showed us, every step of the way. He was such a happy baby. It made it so much easier.”

To this day, she says, “He’s all about joy.”

She’s not only very happy with his progress this past year since they started with Full Life Hawaii, but also with his schooling. Kamakoa spends part of each school day in a third grade classroom, with an aide, and the rest in a special ed class. Malia says he loves school – the social interaction, and being included with the rest of his classmates.

“The majority of the morning, he’s one-on-one with language arts and math,” she says, “and when it comes time for science and social studies, they have him in inclusion. It’s a nice balance for him.”

Kat adds that the school is also working with him physically. “The physical therapist said he needs to strengthen his core, so his arms and everything else will get stronger, and they’re emphasizing this at school with floor exercises and the jungle gym. They just started with dodgeball the other day. They’re getting him running and dodging the ball. He loves that.”

When school’s in session, Kat and Kamakoa spend four afternoons a week together, and they have more time together when it’s not.

They play basketball, swim, or climb on the park’s playground equipment. When other kids show up, Kamakoa introduces himself. It’s another area he and Kat are working on – getting someone’s attention appropriately, and issues of personal boundaries.

Malia talks about how good Kat is with Kamakoa. “She is just so perceptive, and whatever goals we have for him, she really strives for them,” she says. “She is very professional about how she approaches everything.”

And she appreciates that Kat doesn’t baby him. “She said she wants to be his ally, someone he can depend on – but not like a mom. She’s just been a rock star for our family. We are so pleased to have her.”

Kat’s happy, too. She says, simply, “I love Kamakoa. We became best friends within the first couple months. The closer we get, the easier it is to teach him the things he wants to know and needs help with. Having that kind of rapport, I think, really benefits our goals.”

She calls it “a sweet job. It’s really sweet working with him and seeing his excitement. I get really excited seeing him take steps on his own.”

Kamakoa’s parents’ goals for him, which Kat and Full Life are helping him work toward, are that one day he will graduate from high school and be able to live independently. “Whether he wants to be in his own apartment, or in a group living situation,” says Malia. “We just hope he will become a successful citizen; and somehow contribute to his community, wherever he ends up.”

She says she can see him doing it. “We just have to be patient and get him there. I am so pleased with how it is going.”

When Kat considers Kamakoa’s future, she says, “He’s smart. He’s going to do something great. That’s all I know.”

After a few more games of thumb wrestling at the park, it was time to say goodbye. Kamakoa put his arm around me as we walked together to the parking lot. “I’ll help you with your door,” he said. He opened my car door, I got in and he closed it. I mimed an exaggerated “Bye!” through the window and got a huge grin in return.

Daylan Toribio: ‘The Person I Am Now’

Daylan Toribio wears long shorts, his green Garden Exchange T-shirt and Converse tennis shoes as he moves down the aisle of the Hilo garden supply store, “fronting and facing” the merchandise. The 21-year-old’s dark hair is close-cropped and his shy smile is genuine and friendly.

His life these days, says his mother Lorilynn Rapoza, is such a far cry from what she feared when he was diagnosed with developmental delays at around six months old and then with autism during preschool. Those unknowns, she says, were very scary.

Even five years ago, she says, she wouldn’t have dreamed her son could do all that he does now.

But, she says, since last December, when Daylan became a client of Full Life, a Hawai‘i Island nonprofit that supports and empowers people with developmental disabilities, he’s been making amazing progress.

Hilarie Enriques is Daylan’s primary Full Life direct support worker and she works with him in two areas: employment services and personal assistance.

It was Hilarie who helped Daylan get a volunteer position working at Garden Exchange, the family business her great-grandparents founded.

At first she worked right alongside him, teaching him each task step-by-step, and then she backed off a bit so he could do it independently.

Daylan is also learning to grow seedlings, and he sells his plants at Garden Exchange’s nursery. Garden Exchange donates pots and soil, and Hilarie and Daylan set up a small nursery behind her family’s home where he grows hibiscus, marigolds, snapdragons, cabbage and more.

He got his first paycheck from selling plants last month. “I gave it to my mom so we could take it to the bank,” he says. “Now we’re planting Manoa lettuce and sweet red peppers.”

And nowadays, when a Garden Exchange customer asks what kind of fertilizer he or she needs, Daylan knows, because he actually uses them himself.

He and Hilarie work in the store four days a week for four hours a day. Daylan has learned how to do inventory and use the inventory log on the computer; water plants in the nursery; put flat flower boxes together upstairs with the giant, free-standing stapler; repack fertilizer into 5- and 10-pound bags and provide customer service.

The goal, she explains, was for Daylan to learn to do those tasks by himself. And he has.

So much so that he was just hired for a regular, paid position at Garden Exchange.

“He loves it,” says Hilarie. “And everybody loves him at Garden Exchange. He’s like family.”

Daylan’s mom says that he and Hilarie have a great rapport. “He responds to her directions well, and he’s able to communicate back to her very well,” she says. “He’s able to follow rules. She’s taught him things over there that I don’t know how to do! Measuring mixtures of fertilizers, analyzing what he just did; I’m taken by how much he gets it.”

Daylan also works with Hilarie a couple hours a day on independent living goals, such as personal accounting, telling time and exercising.

They also work on cooking. They decide what he wants to learn to make, and go to the supermarket together and find the ingredients. He’s learning how to pay for them. At home, he can now go into the kitchen and cook himself eggs, rice, gravy and other simple meals. He can bake a cake from a mix.

“I’ve seen a major turnaround,” says Hilarie. “In the beginning he had a difficult time even cracking an egg. We watched a couple YouTube videos, wrote down the ingredients, made an analysis. I would do one egg, model it and he would do another egg.” Now they are working together on creating a cookbook for him with healthy recipes.

On Saturdays, they go to Special Olympics , where the seasons rotate between sports (currently it’s basketball). His favorite sport there is softball, and when they are doing track and field, his favorite is the running long jump.

And then on Saturday afternoons they are on to the park, where Daylan participates in Amtgard, a live-action role-playing game where participants use foam-padded replicas of medieval weaponry.

Daylan’s mom says communicating used to be a real problem for Daylan, and that his communications skills have really improved.

“He’s started using words that I use,” she says. “For instance, now sometimes he comes and stands by me and watches what I’m doing. If I say, ‘Can I help you?’ he says, ‘Oh, no, I’m just curious.’ He uses words like ‘analyzing.’ He’s learning so much. I’ve seen such a big growth in him, and in his vocabulary.”

She says that he is up every morning these days, ready to go. When he gets home, he goes and finds her. “I ask, ‘How was your day?’ And it’s always good. He tells me what he’s going to do tomorrow…”

She says she is ecstatic at how happy he is and how well he is doing. “I’m thinking, as long as he has the right tools, encouragement and the right people making him feel important and that he can do things, I cannot ask for more. Seeing what he has already accomplished is great. I can only see him achieving more!”

And she feels he is definitely on the right path. “I can see Daylan reaching that goal of being independent, where he would be able to live on his own one day and maybe have a steady job. I’m very content. Very content.”

Daylan, too, is happy with how his life is going. He says his work with Hilarie has given him great opportunities.

“It’s the best thing in my life,” he says. “It’s made me the person I am today.”

Who is that? “A caring, kind and good person,” he says with a smile.

What an amazing time we had at our last Drumming Social! Thirty-one people showed up and learned Taiko drumming! A big mahalo nui loa goes out to Paul Sakamoto and his group Puna Taiko.

The next and final one for 2013 is on Friday, October 25, 2013. Hawai’i County Parks & Rec will be providing some instruments and assisting with registration, Full Life and AHA will be providing chalk and face/body painting supplies through art donation from The Dreaming Zebra Foundation. Quinn Nelson of Puna Kamali’i, will be sponsoring “Aloha Friday” lei making activity!

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring genetic condition. One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, or approximately 6,000 births per year. Today, there are more than 400,000 people with Down syndrome living in the United States.

On Hawai’i Island, as in most of the United States,individuals with Down syndrome live at home with their families. Full Life Direct Support Workers support many individuals on Hawai’i Island with Down Syndrome assisting them in living full lives pursuing their vocational, social, educational and recreational choices.

All people with Down syndrome have an extra, critical portion of chromosome 21 present in all or some of their cells. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.

Research has shown that this extra chromosome or “translocation” increases in frequency as a woman ages. However, due to higher birth rates in younger women, 80% of children with Down syndrome are born to women under 35 years of age.

There is no definitive scientific research that indicates that Down syndrome is caused by environmental factors or the parents’ activities before or during pregnancy.

The additional partial or full copy of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome can originate from either the father or the mother. Approximately 5% of the cases have been traced to the father.

Please see the notice below regarding HB 200 HD1 relating to the State budget. The house draft significantly reduces the levels of funding for the DD/ID Medicaid Waiver program which would have tremendous impacts to services for the individuals we support. We DO NOT want to see reductions across the board as we have experienced in the past. In order to prevent this from happening we need to be proactive and advocate for appropriate funding levels. Please take a moment and SUBMIT TESTIMONY TODAY!!!

Let’s take this moment to band together and ensure the voices of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are heard. Let’s educate the legislature on why our services are important and how they impact the individuals and families we serve.

Thank you for taking the time to be a part of this effort to ensure the DOH DDD gets the slice of the budget pie that is need to sustain services.

Home and Community Based Services Waiver funding of $2,683,384 for Fiscal Year 2014 and $2,683,384 for Fiscal Year 2015. The House only included $1,500,000 for Fiscal Year 2014 and zero funds for Fiscal Year 2015.

2. Intermediate Care Facilities funding for $704,504 for both FY 2014 and FY 2015. The House did not include any funds for both fiscal years.

3. Fiscal Agent to Process Department of Human Services Claims funding for $290,000 for both FY 2014 and FY 2015. The House did not include any funds for both fiscal years.

Warrant Sweep Article in Today’s News

You may have heard or will hear that an ex-employee of Full Life was arrested on a bench warrant from Arizona in Kealakekua on Monday. Federal Marshals were conducting a “warrant operation” on the Big Island. Their first arrest was this ex-employee. He is charged with three counts of sexual assault in Arizona. He has not been convicted. Full Life staff cooperated fully with the investigation.

Full Life conducted a thorough background check on this employee before he was hired. No convictions were found. All state and internal policies and procedures were followed: fingerprinting, criminal history checks, Adult and Child Protective Services checks. His records show no arrests or convictions.

Full Life never assigns male Direct Support Workers to female participants.

At this point, this young man is being extradited to Arizona.

Full Life’s Annual Meeting was held on January 26th in Waimea. Over 50 members of the Full Life ‘ohana were there including participants, family members, direct support workers, office staff and all of our Board Members.

Glennon Gingo, Board Chair welcomed everyone and presented the Full Life 2012 Corporate Sponsor Award to Annie’s Island Fresh Burgers for their continued support of Full Life.

Christie Crawford presented a financial report. Full Life’s Annual Report 2012 was distributed to all attendees.

After a delicious lunch, our outstanding volunteers and employees were recognized with Full Life 2012 Hanohano Award Certificates, lei and small gifts.
