Direct support professionals assist and support adults and children in community settings. They assist participants in achieving their dreams, goals, and reducing barriers to full inclusion. Among those supported are people with intellectual and developmental disabilities needing assistance with daily living activities, community inclusion (hobbies, sports, employment, volunteering, attending activities), teaching life skills for independent living, providing personal care assistance (to some participants), coaching participants working competitive jobs, exploring career paths, and supporting others to reach their full potential and live full lives in our community! The ideal candidate has a strong desire to create positive impacts on individual lives and enjoys helping people by caring for and supporting them, problem-solving, encouraging, mentoring, and coaching others to achieve their goals and dreams.

Real Direct Support Professional Stories, Real Impact

Cynthia Torian, Full Life DSP

“Full Life is a family-oriented agency, built on equality, trust and genuine appreciation.”

Cynthia is a ray of sunshine. She spreads so much positivity to everyone around her. Cynthia has supported participants in gaining confidence to sing and to experience successful work. This is what Cynthia says about working at Full Life as a Direct Support Professional:

“Full Life is a family oriented agency, built on equality, trust and genuine appreciation. I’ve learned …you get so much love when you give love, care, patience, and understanding. Working with people in a supported and creative way is a part of what makes me happy and feel like I’m doing something to make a difference in someone’s life. What I really like most about Full Life is the freedom I am given by my superiors, who do not really feel like superiors at all. There is an equality that exists at the agency. I feel valued and respected for my knowledge and wisdom. We are more appropriately called a family with great appreciation

Lester Seto, Full Life DSP

“Being a DSP has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my life. Few events in my life have been more rewarding than to see a participant achieve one of the many tasks or goals  written in the participant's individual service plan.”

Lester is one of the most compassionate people we know. Whether it is volunteering side by side with a participant at the library or landscaping at the community park, supporting participants on outrigger paddling excursions, or sharing wisdom and lessons, Lester always goes the extra mile to ensure that people he support live a Full Life. This is what Lester says about working as a Direct Support Professional at Full Life:

“Full Life has made it possible for me to earn a wage to be more independent in my kupuna years and, at the same time,  to assist two young adults to become more independent also .  I experience a deep sense of purpose when I see the two participants whom I serve choose and pay for their own groceries at the supermarket or when one of them volunteers at the public library and the  other wins a trophy at a Special Olympics event.  I am very thankful that Full Life has given me and my two participants resources to become more independent.  I could not ask for a better situation.”

“In my humble assessment, Full Life is in the top tier of excellence among agencies.  The success of Full Life begins with its emphasis, goal, and focus upon the participants with disabilities.  Every dollar, every policy, and every decision at Full Life is based upon what is best for the persons whom Full Life serves.”

Sarah Week, Full Life DSP

“I love my job. Everyday is a gift. [Full Life)] has amazing staff, supportive families, and every day we do something new, creative, and fun.”

Sarah is an amazing and creative advocate and supporter of people with developmental disabilities. She has led Full Life’s day program at Alii Gardens in Kona providing outstanding supports to a variety of participants in West Hawai‘i. Sarah’s strength is building connections and identifying meaningful and fun opportunities for Full Life participants. Here is what Sarah has to say about working as a DSP at Full Life:

“I love my job here at Full Life and I can't say enough about how special and creative and incredible our team and our participants are. What inspires me to work  at Full Life is the participants themselves. I learn from each person every day and I love to see them grow and develop as individuals. At Full Life each participant is given support opportunities and encouragement to make their own choices, create their own life, and speak up for themselves. Everyday we celebrate some accomplishment and it is wonderful to get to share that joy.”

Janet DSP

“I enjoy every minute of my time with Full Life… It is the most fulfilling job I have ever had”

Janet is an incredible Direct Support Professional. Janet supports participants and the organization in so many different ways. Janet came to Full Life after a career in corporate sales and we are so grateful for Janet making a positive impact in the lives of so many participants, family members, and other staff!

“Full Life has be come my Ohana, both participants and staff. I love the fact that my work not only supports the participants, but their families and guardians too. I recommend being a DSP because it will change your life. The experiences and lessons you will learn from your participants cannot be learned in school and those lessons will be with you for life. All participants need to be given the opportunity to live their Full Life”
