Louie Perry III was born in Wahiawa Oahu, and was raised in Pahoa, on Hawai‘i Island, which he considers his home. Rooted and established as a Nature Photographer in Puna, his many nature muses capture diversity in his photos. Many are now covered by lava flow or desecrated by human sprawl, and are things and places of the past.
Louie has a very soft-spoken demeanor, when reflecting on his accomplishments. An avid runner, he represented USA in the 2011 World Special Olympics in Athens Greece. Louie took home three gold medals. Not bad for someone who has had a lifetime of chronic asthma.
To say that Louie inspires others is an understatement. Full Life has supported Louie to be self-employed as an artist. Louie is the inspiration and co-established Abled Hawai‘i Artists (AHA) annual art festival. On its 17th consecutive year, AHA celebrates the spectrum of creativity and promotes the exploration of inclusive entrepreneurship in the arts!
Since then, Louie’s inspiration through AHA, have established other inclusive art festivals such as Puppet4Peace Parades in Hilo, Pua Na Pua Art Festival in Kailua-Kona, many puppet and mask-making events, and most recently the establishment of Abled Hawai‘i Artists Collaborative, in Puna.
Full Life has continued to partner with AHA for all these inclusive art events and provides Louie with the direct support he needs to thrive. This year Full Life supported Louie to have his first solo art show and exhibit!
With much success through many solo and collaborative art exhibits, Louie remains humble and driven by his motto “You Live Once, Live It!”
Dennett Sonoda a cherished member of the Full Life ‘Ohana, will be celebrating her 84th birthday this year. Born in Honolulu, Dennett embodies the true spirit of aloha with her warmth, generosity, and hospitality (“ho‘okipa” in Hawaiian). For 18 incredible years, she has been an integral part of Full Life, enriching our community with her vibrant energy and kind-heartedness.
Dennett’s passions are as varied as they are inspiring. She delights in cooking, giving thoughtful gifts and cards, and creating handmade crafts. Known for her social nature, Dennett thrives in community settings, dancing, making art, and participating in events. Her love for baking and crafting jewelry showcases her creative spirit, and she has found joy in selling her unique creations to the community.
One of Dennett’s newer passions is visual art, and she has blossomed into a prolific artist with the support of Donkey Mill Art Center and Full Life. One of her pieces of artwork was showcased at the Hawaii State Capitol. This creative journey has not only brought her immense joy but has also empowered her to explore new possibilities and express herself in meaningful ways.
Full Life has played a transformative role in Dennett’s life, empowering her to access and actively participate in the vibrant Hawaii Island community. Dennett reflects, “Thank you, I love Full Life. I came to the right place where I feel welcome.” She values the trust and independence that Full Life provides, saying, “They trust me and allow me to make my own decisions.”
Dennett’s accomplishments and community involvement are truly remarkable. She recently visited and camped at Volcano National Park, where she marveled at Halema‘uma‘u Crater and spotted four nēnē birds. During the holiday season, Dennett proudly served as the “queen” of the Kona Christmas Parade on Full Life’s float. As a strong advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities, Dennett travels to Honolulu annually with Full Life to participate in Developmental Disabilities Day at the State Capitol.
One person who has made an impact on Dennett’s journey is her Direct Support Professional, Elaine Camara, affectionately known as “Aunty Cookie.” Dennett shares, “Aunty Cookie makes me happy and shows interest in me.” Her relationship with the Full Life team and the activities they offer have made Dennett feel happier and more confident.
Executive Director Jim Kilgore fondly recalls the special connection he shares with Dennett: “Dennett has a special place in my heart and at Full Life. She brings so much joy, and I’ll always remember how she made me feel when I first moved to the island 10 years ago by coming to my office and welcoming me to Hawai‘i Island and to Full Life.”
When asked to describe Full Life in three words, Dennett chose “caring, family, and love.” Her advice to others considering joining the Full Life community is simple yet powerful: “Meet people and enjoy community activities.”
Dennett’s journey with Full Life exemplifies the organization’s mission to empower individuals to live self-directed lives filled with purpose and joy. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of inclusion, creativity, and connection. Mahalo, Dennett, for inspiring us all with your aloha spirit and zest for life.
