Daylan Toribio

Actor and Model Employee

Daylan Toribio’s story with Full Life is one of growth, creativity, and community. Over the past decade, Daylan has blossomed into an independent, multi-talented individual under the guidance of Vince Zamora, his Direct Support Professional (DSP) and Program Specialist. Described as kind, loving, and social, Daylan enjoys paddling outrigger canoes, shopping, dancing, acting, working, exercising, and being actively involved in his community. He has become a true role model, inspiring others with his determination and zest for life.

“I like Full Life because it helps me learn how to be independent,” Daylan shares. For him, Full Life is special because of “the employees that work with individuals and help them learn to live an independent life out in the community.” Vince, who has worked with Daylan for over ten years and is the State of Hawai’i 2024 DSP of the year, echoes this sentiment. “Full Life is ‘ohana,’ and they foster a person-centered approach to support,” he says. Vince describe Full Life in three words, “empathy, ‘ohana, and love.”

One of Daylan’s most significant milestones was achieving professional independence. After his first job came to an end, Vince supported him in securing a position at Safeway. For two years, Vince provided employment coaching, helping Daylan navigate the demands of his role. Daylan’s confidence and skills grew, and for the past three years, he has worked 100% independently. His colleagues respect him, and his success is a testament to his perseverance and dedication. Vince reflects on moments like these, stating, “The gratification of seeing someone reach their potential and beyond is what I like most about being a DSP.”

Daylan’s journey didn’t stop at professional achievements. Vince introduced him to musical theater, a space where Daylan discovered a passion for dance and acting. Together, they participated in three community theater productions at the Hilo Palace, receiving accolades from the audience and their peers. Recognizing Daylan’s enthusiasm for dance, Vince encouraged him to enroll in classes. Daylan’s hard work culminated in a performance at the studio’s Winter Showcase, an achievement that filled him with pride and confidence.

Daylan’s creativity shines through in his unique sword battle dance style, a captivating blend of movement and storytelling. What began as a fun way to exercise has evolved into an art form he performs at community events. Daylan dreams of showcasing his talent in a future talent show, and with his determination, there’s no doubt he will succeed. Reflecting on his journey, Daylan says, “They [Full Life and Vince] help me learn how to be a good role model and be nice to people in the community.” Vince shares, “Helping participants fulfill their dreams is one of the most fulfilling ways to support a strong community.”

Full Life’s impact on Daylan’s journey is immeasurable. Vince believes in the organization’s mission deeply, saying, “Full Life has changed my life… it really gave me a sense of purpose, which I enjoy.” Daylan feels the same, stating that others should join Full Life to “learn to be hardworking people like myself, enjoy life, and do what they do best.”

Daylan’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of compassion, dedication, and community. His story reminds us all that with the right support and determination, incredible growth is possible. Daylan’s success is not just his own but a reflection of the collective effort and heart of the Full Life ‘ohana. Mahalo, Daylan and Vince, for teaching us all how to be better people with your spirit and creativity.

Nature Photographer

Louie Perry, III

Louie Perry III was born in Wahiawa Oahu, and was raised in Pahoa, on Hawai‘i Island, which he considers his home. Rooted and established as a Nature Photographer in Puna, his many nature muses capture diversity in his photos. Many are now covered by lava flow or desecrated by human sprawl, and are things and places of the past.

Louie has a very soft-spoken demeanor, when reflecting on his accomplishments.  An avid runner, he represented USA in the 2011 World Special Olympics in Athens Greece.  Louie took home three gold medals.  Not bad for someone who has had a lifetime of chronic asthma.

To say that Louie inspires others is an understatement.  Full Life has supported Louie to be self-employed as an artist. Louie is the inspiration and co-established Abled Hawai‘i Artists (AHA) annual art festival. On its 17th consecutive year, AHA celebrates the spectrum of creativity and promotes the exploration of inclusive entrepreneurship in the arts!

Since then, Louie’s inspiration through AHA, have established other inclusive art festivals such as Puppet4Peace Parades in Hilo, Pua Na Pua Art Festival in Kailua-Kona, many puppet and mask-making events, and most recently the establishment of Abled Hawai‘i Artists Collaborative, in Puna.

Full Life has continued to partner with AHA for all these inclusive art events and provides Louie with the direct support he needs to thrive. This year Full Life supported Louie to have his first solo art show and exhibit!

With much success through many solo and collaborative art exhibits, Louie remains humble and driven by his motto “You Live Once, Live It!”

Jason Pascua

Constructing and Building Confidence

Jason Pascua’s story is one of creativity, resilience, and the transformative power of the right support. He began receiving services with Full Life over 20 years ago and his Mom, Dina Pascua stated “from the start we were impressed with the professional, knowledgeable and friendly people working at Full Life.”

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jason Pascua and his Direct Support Professional (DSP), Richard Miller, turned a period of isolation into an opportunity for growth and creativity. Unable to engage in their usual community activities, they explored new hobbies at home and discovered a shared interest in woodworking. Jason quickly took to the craft, demonstrating enthusiasm and a natural talent for shaping and building. As they worked on projects ranging from small benches to elaborate bunk beds, Jason’s fine motor skills improved significantly. His ability to focus and follow complex directions grew stronger as each finished piece brought Jason immense pride, and his creations became a testament to his hard work and determination.

This newfound passion not only enhanced Jason’s physical and cognitive skills but also ignited personal growth in other areas. As his confidence flourished, so did his communication skills, allowing him to express himself more clearly and connect with those around him. Richard’s consistent support and encouragement helped Jason embrace challenges and develop a newfound comfort in the community. Today, Jason’s creations are a testament to his hard work and determination, and his journey serves as an inspiring example of how creativity, resilience, and the right support can transform lives.

Showing his woodworking creations to friends and family has also shifted their perception of him. They see Jason as a contributing member, offering them a product they value and call beautiful.

Today, Jason’s journey is filled with accomplishments that extend beyond woodworking. Jason enjoys playing basketball, hunting and fishing, singing at church, playing the ukulele, swimming, and participating in the Special Olympics. His vision for a good life includes becoming independent, making lots of friends, and thriving as an artist—goals that Full Life actively supports him in achieving.

Jason describes his three DSPs with heartfelt words: Allison as “kind,” Richard as “encouraging,” and Gail as “caring.” His relationship with these dedicated professionals has been instrumental in his journey.

Jason’s mother, Dina Pascua, shares her gratitude for Full Life’s unwavering commitment to her son. “The people that work at Full Life make this agency special,” she says. “They help us develop goals and strategies to improve Jason’s interactions with family, friends, and the community. He’s much happier now that he can express his needs, wants, and concerns.”

Dina also highlights the creativity and dedication of Jason’s DSPs. “They’re patient and skilled, even when Jason is stubborn. Richard’s woodworking talents have been an unexpected blessing that developed during the COVID-19 shutdown, and Full Life was 100% supportive.”

When asked why she would recommend Full Life, Dina points to the organization’s ability to go “the extra mile.” “Although there are other agencies available, Full Life’s commitment to providing trained workers and personalized support makes them our first choice. They’ve truly changed our lives.”

Jason’s journey with Full Life exemplifies the organization’s mission to empower individuals to live fulfilling and self-directed lives. His story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with creativity, resilience, and the right support system. When asked to describe Full Life in three words, Dina chose “supportive, dedicated, and committed”—qualities that shine brightly in Jason’s life every day.

Mahalo, Jason and Dina, for sharing your story and inspiring us all with your determination and aloha spirit.
